Dhaulagiri Region

Dhaulagiri Region is named after the Dhaulagiri I which is the seventh highest mountain in the world at 8,167 metres (26,795 ft) above sea level. This is the 5th highest among the mount in Nepal. The name Dhaulagiri comes from Sanskrit word where DHAWALA means dazzling, white, beautiful and GIRI means mountain. Dhaulagiri Region is in the Western Development Region of Nepal. The first successful summit of Mount Dhaulagiri was in 1960 by the Swiss following from the Northeast ridge.

Famous trekking areas like Mustang, Muktinath, Kali Gandaki valley and Mt Dhaulagiri come under the Dhaulagiri zone. The only hunting reserve, Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve comes in this region. The world’s deepest George, Kaligandaki Gorge flows between Annapurna I (8,091m/26,545 ft) Dhaulagiri I. Pokhara is the entry point of getting into Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Regions.

Beside Dhaulagiri I, Dhaulagiri II, III, V, IV, Junction Peak, Churens East, Central and West, Putha Hiunchuli, Hiunchuli Patan, Gurja, Pota Himal (6,182 m) etc. are the major mountain in the Dhaulagiri Group. Pota has been informally renamed Peak Hawley after Elizabeth Hawley, a notable expedition chronicler and Kathmandu-based reporter.

Dhaulagiri trek is one of the best challenging trek in Nepal. Trekkers need the big labour and previously strong preparation for this trek. Rushing in mountain is always the bad idea, so good acclimatization is necessary before stepping into the high pass areas. The adventure lovers love this trek because of its high Himalayan peaks, hidden valleys, high passes and sweeping vistas. Similarly, trekkers have to passing through mountain clefts and over the most challenging passes: the French Pass (5360 meters) and Thapa Pass (5200 meters) which are filled up with ice. So, this trek needs fully organize trip with the big and professional trekking crews.

Dhaulagiri trek is recommended for the high pass trekkers who are in good physical shape. September to November and March to May are the good trekking seasons to trek in Dhaulagiri area. Other time this trek is filed up with big snow and big wind flow. This is very peace and quiet trek with full or mysteries. So the trekkers feel adventure and curiosities in their every step they put forward.

The first few days this trek passes through the beautiful villages of Gurung, Chhetri, and Magar etc. Their culture, tradition, livelihood etc. will make the trip fruitful. Panoramic Mountain View, glacier, snow, flora-fauna, high pass, sleeping in the snow etc. are the major beauties of this trek. This trek is the synonyms of the paradise.
