Gaurishankar Region

Gaurishankar Region which is also known as Gaurishankar Conservation Area is a protection area in Nepal. It was established in 2010 and it has covered 2179 KM2. This area is situated in Ramechhap, Dolakha and Sindhupalchok Districts. This region is connected with Langtang and Sagarmatha National Parks. Gauri Shankar Himal is the sacred Himal (mountain) of Hindu God Shankar and Gauri (Shiva and Parvati). Gaurishanker is a Sanskrit coinage word of Gauri (Parvati) and Shankar (Shiva). The mountain has two summits: the northern Gauri (Partner of Shiva) which is higher and Southern summit Shankar (Shiva’s Manifestation) thus they are called it Gaurishankar.

Gaurishankar Conservation Area (GCA) is the third Conservation Area entrusted by the Government of Nepal to National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) for the management. Annapurna Conservation Area and Manaslu Conservation Area are already under NTNC management.

The Gaurishankar Conservation Area is very rich in bio-diversity with big varieties of flora-fauna. They include forests of Pinus roxburghii, Schima-Castanopsis, Alnus, Quercus lanata etc. Similarly, wild species, including snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan thar, red panda etc. On the other hand different species of snakes, fish and several amphibians are found in this region. Kalinchowk Bhagwati which is famous Hindu shrine is in Kuri Village in the Kalinchowk. Tamang , Sherpa Chhetri, Newar, Thangmi, Gurung, Brahman, Jirel, Kami, Damai, Sarki etc. are the ethnic group of this trek.

Khimti, Bhotekoshi, Sunkoshi, and Tamakoshi rivers are the big rivers in Gaurishankar region. Tso Rolpa Lake which is one of the most famous glacial lake, attracts the trekkers. Bigu Gompa (2500 m) is also another attraction of this trek in this area.

Gaurishankar (7,145 m) is the second highest peak of the Gaurishankar region, after Melungtse (7,181 m). Gaurishankar lies on the western edge of the Rolwaling Himal, which is 100 KM North-East of Kathmandu and west of Khumbu region. Rolwaling Valley is believed to be the area of mysteries about the debated Yetis. People of this area have the fusion of Tibetan and Nepali cultures.

Gaurishankar is less crowded trekking area because of its remoteness. Gaurishankar Region includes both moderate and technical trek. Trekking in Gaurishankar follows Dolakha, Shigati, Jagat, Simigaon, Daldung, Beding, Na, Rolwaling glacier and it leads up to the Tesi Lapcha Pass, providing access to the region of Khumbu. Mt. Gaurishanker, Rolwaling Himal, Chobabhamre, Yalung Ri, Pachharmo Peak, Ram Dung, Dorje Lakpa etc. are the major attractions this trek. Similarly, Yalung Pass (5310 m) and Tashi Lapcha Pass (5755 m) are two famous and exciting passes during the trek.
