Dolpa Region

Dolpa Region

Dolpo is high-altitude culturally Tibetan region in the upper part of the Dolpa District of western Nepal. One by three Part of the region lies in Shey Phoksundo National Park. The sparse, agro-pastoral population, known as Dolpo in standard Tibetan and Dhol-Wa in the local, is connected to the rest of Nepal with the help of Jufal airport, which can be reached in three days by horse.
Dolpa is geologically part of the sedimentary Tibetan-Tethys zone. It is surrounded by Himalayan mountain chains including the Dhaulagiri (8,172 meters / 26,811 ft). These cloud barriers cause a semi-arid climate, with reported annual precipitations of less than 500 millimeters (20 in).
Dolpo appears in historical records since the 8th century. In the time from the 6th century to the 8th century, the Tibetan Yarlung dynasty conquered most Tibetan-speaking territories. In 842, Tibet fell apart, and Dolpo fell under the kingdom of Purang. But later on, Gorkhas conquered the Dolpo in 1789 B.S and unified it in the kingdom of Nepal with the name Dolpa.
In spite of the near inaccessibility of the region and tourism restrictions for the more remote parts, Dolpa is a popular destination for trekking tourism. The entire district was closed to trekkers until 1989 but after 1989 southern part of Dolpo was opened to organized trekking groups. Trekkers need to drive (which is 10-12 hrs) to Nepalgunj and then fly to Juphal from where the trek begins in the Dolpo region. During the trekking time we should pass through interesting villages, trekking routes and as well as we can meet fascinating people over there. Trekkers should also cross a few high Himalayan passes and can enjoy the vast and tranquil beauty of Phoksundo Lake. From Shey Gompa, we follow the ancient Trans Himalayan Trade route and return back to Jhuphal as our trek ends. Simply speaking, this trek is like a paradise in the earth with lots of natural beauties.
Lower Dolpa Trek, Upper Dolpa Trek (Jomsom our or Juphal or Dunai Out) are the most famous trekking routes in the Dolpa region. For your kind information, some people call Dolpa and some call Dolpao for this and both of them mean same place name.
